I wouldn't be surprised if time is a big factor in that, too. We spend so much time away from home that going out to the airport and flying more, not only takes available funds away from other things, but also takes you away from home and family even more. Without the family support of an aviation hobby, flying becomes an aviation job and starts taking a back seat to other things in our lives.
Try not to lose the dream and turn flying into a job.

My experience with airline crews has been the same. Most of my captains have not even flown (outside of work) since they started as a first officer! I haven't flown a small plane in about a year and it is an itch I'm dying to scratch, its just hard at the regional-FO pay level.
